StoneCrest Medical Center’s New Outpatient Neuro Rehab Center Meets Demands of Aging Population

(Smyrna, TN) November 29, 2007 – Every 7.5 seconds a Baby Boomer in the United States turns 60 years old. As a result, the number of Americans affected by diseases of aging—many of them neurological such as stroke, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's—is expected to skyrocket within the next several decades.  StoneCrest Medical Center is well-prepared to meet the challenge of the needs of this aging population with a new outpatient Neurological Rehabilitation Center.

With the opening of this 3,000 square foot center, StoneCrest becomes the first hospital in Rutherford County to offer an outpatient rehabilitation center with a fully functioning kitchen, living room, and bedroom that effectively allows patients to practice life skills within a functional household environment.

“StoneCrest is proud to be the leader in bringing quality neurological rehabilitation services directly to Rutherford County,” confirmed chief executive officer Neil Heatherly. “With this opening, local rehabilitative therapy patients who previously traveled to Nashville will now be able to receive treatment closer to home.”

Other services include computer-simulated activities for pre-driving training, balance and vestibular training, and neuropsych counseling. Additionally, StoneCrest will now be one of only four facilities in the state of Tennessee with Dynavision 2000 (pictured right), which is a state-of-the-art device utilized for low vision testing and treatment, as well as the treatment of visual and motor impairment.

In addition to providing cutting edge technology, the Neurological Rehabilitation Center is staffed by therapists specializing in the treatment of patients with neurological conditions. “By employing highly experienced neurological rehabilitative therapists, our center is better staffed to address the specific needs of the neurological patient population as compared to the traditional outpatient rehabilitation setting,” stated director of physical medicine and rehabilitation services Scott Weiskittel.

“The unique form of individualized, interdisciplinary care offered by our staff ensures the success of each patient in achieving his or her rehabilitative potential.  It also better prepares our team to meet our goal of improving patients’ physical, communicative, and cognitive abilities to maximize their level of functional independence and safety.”

The Center is located in Suite 160 of the StoneCrest Physician’s Office Building, which is adjacent to the hospital.
